JOE'S CORNER

Lighting Designer Richard Pilbrow and his assistant Michael Gottlieb were in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Los Angeles Music Center. They were lighting the new, first-time-ever production of the Opera The Amazing Mr. Fox.

Sitting in at the dress rehearsal and watching the show were Lighting Designer Marc Rosenthal who was responsible for the projections, and Lighting Designer Genny Wynn. Seeing this colorful fairy-tale opera is a delight for the eyes.

At intermission we were chatting about the lighting and Richard Pilbrow asked me how I liked seeing a show that was 'completely lit by GamColor'. I was very pleased about the lighting and the fact that it was all GamColor. At the same time, Michael Gottlieb, Pilbrow's assistant from New York talked about his use of GamColor. Marc Rosenthal advised that he recently opened a production at the Odyssey Theatre (Los Angeles) called Peace and all of the color was GamColor. Genny Wynn had recently finished lighting a show in New York, a one-man musical called Henry VII, and she had used only GamColor!

It certainly was a pleasing experience to be standing there with four experienced lighting designers who were saying how much they liked GamColor and how they were using it more and more on their shows. I don't know how we can get more than 100% of the color on a show but it would be nice to come up with an encore.

What makes GamColor so exciting for the designers depends on their interest and point of view. Richard Pilbrow keeps commenting that he loves GamColor, if for nothing else, the numbering system which is logical and organized. "It makes one more problem a little easier to deal with in the theatre". Durability, interestingly enough, is rarely of much interest to the designers, it is the right color that they are looking for, which counts the most!

So no matter how much I tell them that GamColor lasts longer, it seems to be of little interest unless there is a specific fade problem they are trying to solve.

Every designer has his or her favorite GamColors and the list keeps growing. Thank you one and all for your support. We do it all for you and it wouldn't be any fun if you didn't come to the party. We will continue to develop more new colors and we hope you will continue to like and use what we at GAM are doing.
