Highlighting up-and-coming young designers who are using GamColor

When Lonnie Alcaraz isn't busy working as a Lighting Designer on Universal Studio's Japan theme park, he lends his talents to equity-waiver theatre companies in the Los Angeles area. His most recent project was for the Golden Mean Theatre Company's production of Desire at the Gascon Theatre Center in Culver City, California.

Desire, written and directed by Golden Mean Artistic Director John Langs, is based on a short story by Tennessee Williams. The play follows Tom, a young writer in New Orleans, and the subject of his work in progress, a young man who Tom works with, named Burns. Burns is viewed as a misfit and miscreant by everyone around him.

Lonnie chose to light the show entirely with GamColor and Patterns. He chose GAM's Construction A (635) as a down wash and used the TwinSpin II to create a fire effect for the show's climactic end. The GamColor that Lonnie chose for his palette ran the gamut-from very light color corrections such as 860 Sky Blue for 'normal' office and street scenes, to deep saturated colors such as 250 Medium Red XT and 945 Royal Purple. The uniquely saturated GamColor added a surreal quality to scenes that explored the more emotional fantasy worlds of the characters.

"I've always really enjoyed using GAM's blues and purples, but until this show, I'd never experimented much with the rest of the GAM palette. The thing that impressed me most about GamColor was that, at times, I had a large variety of colors on stage, and my cues never got muddy, as they tend to do when a lot of colors are used," Lonnie said.

Alcaraz has two upcoming projects at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California. True West in late September, and La Posada, which he designs every year in December. In January, Lonnie is off to Japan for a year and a half with Universal to put the finishing touches on rides and shows such as Creature Makeup, Jurassic Park, Snoopy Studios, and Terminator II 3-D.
