Highlighting up-and-coming young designers who are using GamColor
C. Lindsey Perkins is the first designer we would like to introduce to you. Lindsey is finishing her second year at the University of California at Irvine, where she is earning a MFA in Lighting Design. Her latest design, for the Bertolt Brecht play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui used GamColor exclusively. The play chronicles Hitler's rise to power in prewar Germany using the parable of a gangster in 1930's Chicago offering 'protection' to vegetable markets.
Lindsey told us that although she favors GamPatterns, she had never used GamColor before because low budgets assigned to school productions usually force students to use the color in stock. But because Arturo Ui is such a dynamic and moving show, she wanted to try a new approach. Lindsey's GamColor palette consisted primarily of blues and lavenders. She told us "I didn't need to replace any gels during the run of the show. Nothing burned out, not even the really saturated colors such as 250 (Medium Red XT) and 890 (Dark Sky Blue). That was unusual for me, since I used those colors in the majority of my cues."
Leigh Allen, a first year graduate designer, was Lindsey's assistant designer. This was her first experience with GamColor as well, and she was impressed with its performance and look. "I felt the GamColor palette that Lindsey chose really helped facilitate the design concepts she established."
Lindsey added "I am quite familiar with the categorizing systems of other color companies, but I found GAM's numbering system very easy to learn and I was comfortable with their color wheel. I was happy with my GamColor choices and I will definitely use GAM in the future."
This summer will be Lindsey's third at the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts, where she will be a design assistant. She will complete two more designs at UCI as she finishes her degree requirements. Lindsey's thesis design will be Arcadia by Tom Stoppard. (RL)
